Paul Woods Oradour-sur-Glane Exhibition, Tain Gallery
The boys of 6th class received a personal invitation from the artist Paul Wood, a Dundalk native, to visit his exhibition of paintings about the June 10th, 1944 massacre of 642 inhabitants of the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in the days following the D-Day landings in Normandy by a Waffen SS group of German soldiers, many of whom died in action in the months following the massacre.
Paul Woods visited the school two years ago to speak on the subject and has now brought his exhibition home to Dundalk. He explained the history of what happened and how he created his paintings. Most of his works take 1-3 months to complete. He had to answer some very interesting and difficult questions. Many thanks Paul and the Tain Gallery for the invitation, talk and the opportunity to meet the artist in person.
Paul Woods is currently studying for a Masters degree in Military History, a subject on which he has produced many works of art. He is busy preparing for an exhibition of his paintings on the 1916 Rising. His exhibition will be on display in Athlone in the summer months.
